Me vs. the proverbs: the absurd and outdated

Being a Virgo has certainly started to take its toll on me. I don’t really believe in star signs especially the ones sold to innocent people desperate for encouragement, but I do believe in the possibility of people born in a particular month sharing particular character traits. That’s what the world does. It gets God’s work and finds a way to make it a more “celestial” way to explain it to humans. Belonging to Virgo leaves me an active thinker, I always debate anything before it settles in my head, and sometimes it occurs deep in my subconscious without my consent, the English proverbs inclusive.

Here is my problem, these proverbs are to be taken literally, and yet we live in a practical world, and secondly most of them were intended for minority groups, in minority situations, and lastly times change, some are just outdated.

       Curiosity killed the cat;
The proverb everyone has used once at least in their life. It is a warning for people not to poke into things that do not concern them. But really let’s think about it, how would you know what concerns you and what doesn’t if you are clueless about what is being discussed? And even worse, if you are clueless about what is being discussed behind your   back, how do you decide what concerns you and what dosen't? How sure are you the people discussing behind your back are not planning to kill you, would it hurt to ask the scary guy in the dark alley if he had any evil plans that night before passing by him? No! Would it hurt to ask the Grim Reaper what he’s doing in your car seat when driving down a dark road high on alcohol? No! So why would someone ask another person to stop asking questions about things that their brain doesn’t fathom?
My theory: This proverb is not fully a fact; ironically it only applies to people who have lost their sense of curiosity. And all that time without practice has left them armatures at the art of asking questions. And the only time they try to ask them, they literally die from curiosity.
Case solved: Curiosity killed the wrong cat and I have the world’s greatest genius to prove my theory

Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.
For this experiment, you will need a lion, a jaguar and a leopard and a blue room. Yes blue is the color for dramatic effect. Then place them into the same room and drop in the fattest goat you can find, and see how much 3 enemies living together is a bad idea.
Case solved: keep your harmless enemies close, and your harmful friends closer.

The pen is mightier than the sword
I’m done listening to literal meanings, I bet the exaggeration in our daily speech is the reason the world's  scientists have not yet found the key to its biggest mysteries, nuclear fusion inclusive. First of all we live in the era of facebook and emails.  Countries have literally gone to war over one president not accepting the other's request or a mere follow back, and now you tell me a pen is mightier than a sword. Go back to the blue room, hopefully the lion is still alive, bruised, but alive, on the ground is a pen and sword, let's see which one you pick. For your sake i really hope you do not pick the pen.

Case solved: the sword is mightier than the pen, but once in a while the pen will get lucky and cause more damage or prevent it.

A picture is worth more than a thousand words
I wrote a special poem for this one;
STEVE: the idiot
Steve was leading a rebellion.
Marching day and night into oblivion.
Steve wanted to inspire his army,
Show them a picture of a stash of gold he did,
Steve died alone on the battlefield
      By Lincoln Nidoi
Case solved: a picture is worth more than ten words

Necessity is the mother of invention.
The key to the madness in this proverb is in my previous blog post.
Case solved: Laziness is the mother of necessity and invention, they are siblings, (the father being boredom but he doesn’t like to be associated with his kids very much, so let’s leave him out of this)

Good things come to those who wait
I see what this proverb implies but I just do not see how this applies to all situations. First of all you can wait for a phone call from the lottery team and your land lord calls instead, and the most likely probability is you can wait for your pen to turn into an airplane and you will die before seeing it happen.(for all those who have ever got bored in class with only a pen and creativity at their hands)
Case solved: good things will come to those who wait wisely

And finally the biggest lie of them all;
       Practice makes perfect
No one can ever be perfect. To prove this theory we are going to have to go in the opposite direction, let’s say you are practicing to write with both hands accurately, and the pen slips on one side forming a crescent , perfection would not mean never making this mistake again, perfection would be making the same mistake two more times, the first time (second time) being coincidence, the second time (third time) being perfection
Case closed: practice makes … (am still thinking about this one)
And so as you can see, a good number of the proverbs we use are either outdated, absurd or apppeal to the minority today, and thus “I will none of their usage, this day forth...”
PS: I am right on all counts and I have a 2,000 paged Oxford Dictionary plus a dead genius to prove it!

Is the world getting lazier??

The world’s once richest and now lingering somewhere in the top three once said if he was to employ a person to do a job, he would choose a lazy person because he would find the easiest way to do it. Bill Gates consciously or unconsciously inspired a lot of lazy people, and they would later return the favor. It has always been said that necessity is the mother of invention but nobody ever said anything about what causes innovations, my theory: laziness.
The things invented show the need for need for their presence. The innovations are just pure laziness. A wise man invented a plow to help him crack the hard ground faster, the lazy man added a seat to it, another wise man invented a wheel to transport goods with ease, the lazy man still found a way to add a seat  to it. The steam engine followed the same fate, invented in the industrial revolution to transport goods and some lazy guy still found a way to add thousands of seats to it as the space for goods grew smaller, enough with the seats though; I believe I have stressed that point enough. On to the other lazy innovations that we hail today. A wise Chinese man invented paper, another wise man sat down and invented the printing press, the lazy man sat down and decided mankind should not suffer the burden of hard copper buttons and decided to make them plastic, then came the emails, and here we are today, but am not done yet. Look at the multimedia industry, radios replacing the newspapers, then televisions brought to replace radios and the  phones, invented for communication, now they play music and do online shopping.

It seems the world is demanding more for ways to make life fun and easier instead of work easier. The difference is in whether or not the improvement bears productivity; take for example the invention of bulbs, largely for people to work better in the dark, today they are used for the opposite, fun at night. Steel invented for heavy duty constructions is being used for construction of watches and the computers invented for work are being improved each day to do less work and more play, let’s face it we are the laziest generation to have ever roamed this earth and we can’t blame the scientists for we are the ones who heap the pressure on what we term “necessities”.
Then came the monster called the internet, invented still for productivity, look at what the innovators have done with it, am sure they are proud of their work.  They deserve a good pat on the back for changing the meaning of friends and followers. One went as far as adding the word "unfriend" to the dictionary. It was obvious some people were tired of visiting friends, or even too lazy to socialize. Then came the sister in crime, the computer, changing the meaning of games with videos games breaking entertainment product sales records time and again.
Despite all that has been said we have to love our generation because we may have invested in innovations but they do make life worth living. But i couldn't leave without announcing the laziest invention/innovation of all time;
Mr Eugene J Polley you take the crown prize for coming up with the remote control, anybody can see you were tired of walking to your television and pressing the dial button and closely behind the guys who put seats on the plow to later name it a tractor.

The field of medicine is no exception; medicine that was invented to keep people sane is now being used to drive people literally insane. I can't possibly exhaust the extent of our laziness but am sure you can come up with more examples.
And with that i rest my case, yes the world is getting lazier and coming up with better word for the laziness and unless people start pressing for inventions, we will only keep getting lazy a*s innovations!!

The Brain vs the Heart

I wonder who came up with the idea that a tooth and the human heart should share semblance. The humiliity the picture draws is undue.Given all the brain goes through it should be the one with a people's favourate badge on the chest. It should be the one on thanksgiving cards instead of rotting in the middle of some scientific book whose author you could never remember unless you name your teacher after him.
And then the brain gets to be the one with all the complications. This brings to mind the image of a couple. Like the saying goes unlike poles attract so all successful couples have the extrovert and the introvert. The heart and brain are in constant conflict because they are both exroverts, trying to gain dominion over the body.

Well of course some people think the heart is just what science sees, a blood-pumping vessel. Yes and  No. True, "a heart" pumps blood but "the heart" is that part of the brain that refuses to bow to the orders of the mind. Yes the mind and brain are different too. According to "Yahoo answers" (who gave it the right? i honestly don't know)..The brain is the organ inside the head that controls thought, memory, feelings and activity. The Mind is the part of a persons brain that makes it possible for a person to think, feel emotions and understand things.... So we have a situation on our hands, the mind wants to regulate emotions according to reality, the heart wants to do it anyway, the end result a moving mammal with more character irregularities than a dog and cat living in the same house. I guess its this conflict that makes us different from other animals.
Today you follow your heart, tomorrow your mind regrets it, i actually feel sorry for the brain, hypothetically speaking it has to watch on as its two kids fight right under its nose, the heart will always act on impulse and the leave the regretting for the brain. What's worse is that when the heart turns out to be right, it claims all the honour undue. When it's wrong, the fault lies on enviromental factors." The human heart after all only pumps blood" they say. Oh now you remember? With that said i look forward to the day Valentines Day cards will be alittle more realistic.

Till then i remain a non-beleiver.
Yours trully.

Poetry : Building the nation, by Henry Barlow

Building The Nation

                                            By Henry Barlow

Today I did my share
In building the nation.
I drove a Permanent Secretary
To an important urgent function
In fact to a lunch at the Vic.
The menu reflected its importance
Cold bell beer with small talk,
Then fried chicken with niceties
Wine to fill the hollowness of the laughs
Ice-cream to cover the stereotype jokes
Coffee to keep the PS awake on return journey.
I drove the Permanent Secretary back.
He yawned many times in back of the car
Then to keep awake, he suddenly asked,
Did you have any lunch friend?
I replied looking straight ahead
And secretly smiling at his belated concern
That I had not, but was slimming!
Upon which he said with seriousness
That amused more than annoyed me,
Mwanainchi, I too had none!
I attended to matters of state.
Highly delicate diplomatic duties you know,
And friend, it goes against my grain,
Causes me stomach ulcers and wind.
Ah, he continued, yawning again,
The pains we suffer in building the nation!
So the PS had ulcers too!
My ulcers I think are equally painful
Only they are caused by hunger,
Not sumptuous lunches!
So two nation builders
Arrived home this evening
With terrible stomach pains
The result of building the nation -
- Different ways.

END

The under-dog in the poem, is clear, he's the chauffer.

This poem is  a political satire, though you may find abit of social satire depending particular character or aspect of the Permanent Secretary's life caught your attention the most.Imagery, euphemism, metaphors,1st person narration and diction act as the icing to the bitter cake. First you sense a bit of pride in the chauffeur, then you realize its a mockery of his life, then it turns comic to the point of no return.
In a nutshell Henry Barlow and the mysterious chauffeur deserve the credit due, this poem a wonderful  piece of literature that deserves more credit than it has been given.

Kids for a minute,.. or two

Let's be kids for a minute, imagine yourself living in a world where dipping your hand in paint and dragging it across a piece of paper was what we called art. The only thing we watched on tv were cartoons and we glared in bewilderment each time the house gathered to watch Oprah. To be honest, each family had that program that every adult in the family watched during our prime tv time. Mine just happend to be The Oprah Winfrey Show. I missed over 200 episodes worth of 2d animations as my family sat down to watch their programs, so i guess i know who to blame for my addiction to cartoons at my age.
Kids don't have problems , we had people at home to do the worrying, forgetfull minds to do the forgeting and filled with so much innocence we didn't even notice all the violence in the world. What happened to us you ask? (that's if you asked yourself the question, if you didn't, fear not this blog is for you)
We woke up. Believe it or not all the days we spent going to school were only preparation to expose the mammal within us. Think about it who sleeps the whole day and still gets good grades and always has food on the table, sounds like something out of a dream right? My heart-felt sympathy goes  out to anyone who had a rough childhood because no kid deserved that. What makes my sarcastic theory even more realistic is that no one ever remembers how it happened. One day you wonder why everyone watches that program you hate, the next day you associate with it. We all just woke one day with one too many issues to deal with...
\

Don't get me wrong, growing up is a good thing. We get to become indepent and create kids of our own that makes the cycle complete. But the question bobs up, what is growing up? If we are to ask each adult their opinion the responses would defer. To some its a matter of developing a conscience, being afraid to do the things you freely did as a kid and to others its a matter of following your dreams. Growing up is a time when you take responsibility of your actions. The cycle continues each day as kids learn the definition of growing up from the people around them, now that you know its a cycle, are you ready to take responsibility for how the kids around you define growing up? Simply put, Have you grown Up? Food for thought
